Fish is NOT what I want in our grey tank! Can you imagine the stench on a hot summer week? Yuck!

Perhaps you have never thought about this but ANY TIME you make tuna salad or use any canned fish product (salmon, oysters, classic, sardines etc.) You are faced with how to deal with the oil or water packed with said products.

Living in an RV with a grey tank, not a household septic system needs different considerations!

Here is what I do! Hope these tips may work for you. I also include more tips at the end of the article on keeping your grey tank in a “happy place”.

1. THE BIG DRAIN!

2. THE SAFE STORE

3. THE FINAL CLEAN BEFORE THE WASH!

I forgot to mention I also put the paper towel in the freezer bag too then pop back into the freezer till garbage day!

Hope this little tip saves you from a fouled grey tank!

Other tips for maintaining grey tank “good vibes” are:

1. Always wipe off plates and bowls with a paper towel or napkin before washing them in the sink. This removes the bulk of grease, sauces and food gunk.

Ditto for pots and fry pans, air fryer baskets, instant pots, too!

2. Use a grey tank treatment (can be found online or at an RV store). We use the same UNIQUE black tank digester product in our grey tank. It is recommended for this use by the manufacturer. We pour about a quarter cup down after each grey tank flush out.

3. When or if we start to smell any semblance of sour grey tank odor (it can smell as bad or worse than grey tank), we do the “Cascade TX”. (We only do this every now and then for a deep clean, maybe once every 3-4 months) Using LIQUID Casacde dishwasher soap, we pour 1 cup down the kitchen sink drain then follow that with about a gallon of HOT water. This is BEST done just after you flush your tanks and are going to be hitting the road for at least an hour or so. Having this in the bottom of the grey tank and the movement made by rolling along in your RV really helps the detergent to break down harder grease and any food particles in the grey tank. There is NO need to drain it. Just use your sinks as normal and dump the grey as normally needed. Note, it does work to some degree if you are stationary, too. Dishwashing detergent is formulated to cut grease and break down food particles so it does work better than normal dishwasher soap you use IN the sink to wash dishes.

4. I use a plastic dish wash pan in my sink to wash dishes. Not only do you use far less water, but at the end of washing, I have a trick! Normally, I will wait a little while before I dump out the used dish water – this allows food particles to settle to the bottom. Then I very slowly pour the dish water down the drain, tipping the pan towards a corner of the basin. By doing this slowly, a lot of the food particles sink to the bottom and funnel themselves into the low corner of the basin. With only perhaps a 1/4 cup of water left in the basin, I lift it out (still with tipped to corner) and dump that watery food mess out of the basin directly into my kitchen garbage can. It REALLY cuts down on what even goes into my kitchen dish sink drainer!

5. Finally, have a really good sink dish drainer/strainer! Wire ones are great but I find that some of them get kinda gross after a while. Here is the one I use and love it! The holes are small enough to “weed out” 87% of food particles!

  2. […] WHAT MAKES IT WORSE….is that we pride ourselves on being very diligent in not (as much at all possible) to allow foodstuffs, cooking grease etc down the kitchen sink. See our prior post on our tips and tricks for holding tank maintenance and care. https://thepewterpalace.com/2023/12/17/fish-in-my-grey-tank/ […]
