Fresh Water Tank Sanitizing & Water Fill Sanitation

Kevin with his handy dollar store spritzer bottle!

There are some slight variances depending on full timing versus vacation RVing.

These are procedures and processes we have used successfully for over 17 years of RVing part time/vacation camping, and since 2023 our full time RV traveling life.

Part timing….
1) 1/4c of bleach for every 15 gal of your fresh water tank capacity. ***Unscented, plain original bleach not the anti splash either.
2) however you get your fresh water into your trailer, e.g. fresh water fill cap, with a funnel pour your measured out bleach into your fresh water hose first.
3) BTW-hook up any other filters you may use to between the spigot and the hose before starting this process.
4) place water hose into fresh water fill tube, turn on water from spigot and fill tank completely till water comes out the vent. Shut off.
5) go inside, turn on all faucets including shower until you smell bleach water coming out. Turn off faucets. Let sit in lines and drain pipes.
6) top off your fresh tank again. Let site 8-12 hours.
7) completely drain your fresh water tank. Refill with clear, )( preferably filtered) water thru same hose. Run thru all your faucets again. Do twice!
8) If you are going to use your fresh tank for drinking etc. immediately Then go ahead after the 2 flushes and fill and use.

PART TIMING/VACATION USE:

If you are NOT going to use the fresh tank immediately then leave the tank completely drained and empty.
IF you are seasonal or if trailer has not been used for 1 to 2 months then repeat all of this process.

FULL TIMING:
As full timers we do this sanitization process 4 times a year. We also replace our inline filters (blue one, completely replaced every 3 months) the Clear H2O we clean the internal filters every 3 months.

EXTRA NOTES:

  1. when attaching to ANY spigot anywhere we spritz down the handle and faucet with bleach water before opening the spigot. We have witnessed horror stories of folks touching the faucets while in the process of dumping black tanks! Yuk!
  2. We let the water flow from the spigot at least 30 sec to 1 minute to clear the line of any rust, sediment, etc.  There is no telling how long it has been since that spigot was used.
  3. We spritz our hose ends, and water fill area with the bleach water solution at every use.
  4. Always screw your hose ends together to prevent dirt, bugs etc from getting inside hoses. It should go without saying, have dedicated fresh water hoses only used for filling tank, nothing else!

Hope this helps!

As always please feel free to comment or ask us any questions!

Most sincerely,

Kevin & Luise Sherman
